This month I’m taking part in an online Improvisation challenge. Courtney gives us a piece of music every day for us to dance to, and invites us to post a video clip to share with the group (if we want to). Sometimes the music is obviously bellydance music, sometimes not so much! For example, on Thursday it was a heavy metal version of Alf Leyla Wa Leyla, today I was dancing to a Chinese song by Tia Ray.
It’s making me think about what sort of music I like to dance to. My own preference will always be for Arabic music, because that’s the foundation of this dance for me. I love music that has passion and emotion, that gives me something that I can express in my dancing. If I don’t have the emotional connection then the very least I need is a good beat! I love music that has changes in tempo and musical highlights that you can play with.
The challenge takes place on Facebook, but I’m posting all my videos on Instagram, and I’m not the only one. You can find a lot of the other participants’ clips there using the hashtag #courtneyssummerimprovchallenge. It’s really interesting to see how different dancers interpret the same music.
