I always like to have a video night to finish off the year. It’s a way of putting bellydance into its wider context. It’s also good for students to see different dancers and different styles to inspire them, and maybe to see a body type closer to their own, rather than just me!
This year, I put together a playlist that started off with some classic songs (Enta Omri, Lissa Fakr and Alf Leyla Wa Leyla), and then went into Egyptian dance history, with the stars from the 1930s, 40s and 50s (Naima Akif, Tahia Carioca, Samia Gamal), then the 60s and 70s (Nagua Fouad, Mona Said, Suhair Zaki – I realised afterwards I’d left out the biggest star of that time, the wonderful Fifi Abdo!), then the stars of the 80s, 90s (Dina & Lucy) and finally the stars of right now (Randa, Dandesh, Aziza, Brenda, Sahar). I’ve also included some clips of dancers that I just like!
